2020 Jackson-Triggs Grand Reserve Pinot Grigio
Although the 2019 harvest season in Ontario was delayed due to somewhat damp and cool conditions, overall it was a decent season. We experienced an unusually late start to sparkling harvest this year, with the first fruit harvested in late September from the Claystone vineyard. While ripening took longer than is typical, the quality was exceptional. The balance of the sparkling fruit was picked by late October and certainly showcased terroir driven sparkling’s. There was a strategy at play as to when to pick the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at their peak before damper, late autumn conditions settled in. Having negotiated this, we expect some classic and elegant wines to follow. As anticipated, Bordeaux varieties hung longer to achieve optimum ripeness.
The fruit for this elegant Pinot Grigio came from two of our vineyards, one on the scenic Twenty Mile Bench and the other on the Niagara Escarpment in Vnemount Ridge. The fruit was destemmed and left on skins for 8 hours prior to pressing and cold fermented at 13 degrees for 20 days. The lots were fermented separately and blended to create perfect harmony of the two terroirs, yielding a bold, rich varietal style.
Floral acacia and honeysuckle perfume, Niagara pears and sweet honeydew melon are evident on the nose of this delightful wine. The palate is rife with a chalky acidity balanced with soft pear flesh, lavender and orange peel.
Food Pairing Notes
This Pinot Grigio pairs beautifully with a fresh caprese salad, grilled chicken with lemon and capers, seafood antipasti, and creamy linguine a la vongole.
