The Grand Reserve Shiraz is full and rich on both the nose and the palate. Red fruit and cherry complement the well integrated oak notes, backed up by chocolate and mocha aromas. On the palate, this wine exhibits bold flavours of cherry and coffee with good weight, rich mouth feel and a lingering finish.
A mild winter and warm start to spring allowed the vines to start the year in great shape. After a quick start to the season, temperatures cooled down a bit and growth slowed to a more normal pace. Despite the cooler temperatures and regular rain throughout summer 2017, there were also plenty of sunny days that provided a good mix of water and sunlight for the vines. Harvest started slightly later than normal, with our earliest varieties coming in the first week of September. The vineyards benefited from the ample hours of sunshine, the above average temperatures in the months leading up to harvest, providing grapes of very high quality and great yield for both red and white varietals.
This Shiraz was picked at perfect maturity; the fruit was carefully crushed and sent to the tank to cold soak for 72 hours. The tanks were warmed to begin the 10 day fermentation with carefully selected yeast. The tanks were rotated to mix the skins 3 times daily, extracting colour and flavour before gently pressing and completing malolactic fermentation.
Complemented by aromas of cracked black pepper and warm baking spices combined with lush blackberries and ripe black cherries with sweet tobaccoand dark chocolate characters dominate the nose. The palate exhibits rich ripe blackberries, tar and charred wood accentuate ripe cherries and pungent peppercorn spices.
